A frustrating dilemma for
many C5 Registry members
comes when it is realized that children 13 and under (and small adults)
cannot legally ride in the passenger seat with a functioning air bag. To
further complicate the situation, many new car dealerships are unable
(or unwilling) to obtain and install an on / off air bag switch. [CLICK

Our friends at the factory are working hard
and are almost 1000 VINs ahead of 1998
production. Looking at the production
numbers [ Click
Here ] through January 18, 1999 we
are able to get an idea of what 1999 C5
owners are ordering. As most of you know, we at the C5
Registry are big fans of the Z51
Performance Handling Package [ Click
Here ] and the sale of this option has increased
(almost double) 15 1/2 percentage
points over last year. At this rate, maybe the factory will
realize that ALL Corvettes
should come with a Z51 package
and will eliminate any other suspension options!!"

Dave Hill made the following announcement to the C5
Registry members at the Rolex
24 Hours of Daytona. Mr. Hill stated to
all members present - about 150 -
that "a C6
development team has been formed and is in the early stages of beginning
work on the C6
Corvette. Of course, this
work is in the preliminary stage and certainly several years into the
future."
Mr. Hill went on to
state that export production
would be quadrupled in the coming months. Those
of us present felt this meant a couple of thousand additional C5s
would be sent overseas compared to previous year's production. This is
just my opinion but it looks like we want to have a good showing of C5
Corvettes in Europe before the C5R Racer goes
to Le Mans in 2000.- Jake

After leading
the GT2
Class for 12 hours at this weekends Rolex
24 Hours at Daytona, The
number 2 C5-R
developed an oil leak and charging problems. But the team hung in there
with a tremendous effort and managed to finish 3rd
in the GT2
class. GREAT SHOWING for a
first time out! Post race quote from Ron
Fellows (No. 2 GM Goodwrench Corvette C5-R):
"We had an oil
consuming problem. It started consuming oil, and eventually the
officials said to fix it or park it. I guess we were leaving a fair
amount of liquid on the track. I don't really like racing in the race --
this is a difficult place to do it. We were in contention for so long.
We surpassed expectations, as far as I'm concerned. We were able to go
fast enough to learn exactly what the Vipers had in terms of speed. That
means a lot. They didn't sandbag. We set a decent time and then had to
go for it. That's a good thing, to learn what they've got." Congratulations
to Corvette
Racing and
the C5-R
Teams!!

Strong Rumor has
it the C5-R
Testing at Daytona is
going very well. The times
are reported to be better than that of last years Viper team!
The rumor continues that reigning GT2
champion Mercedes has called in the expert French Viper team to
take on the Corvette!
Looks like the battle lines have been drawn folks... The
battle of the V's -- Vette
vs. Viper.

Chevrolet is preparing to
celebrate the "official" return of Corvette
to road racing when the new factory-developed C5-R
race cars (based upon the production C5)
debut at the Rolex
24 Hours at Daytona on
January 30-31, 1999. We are just as excited about the new production C5
Hardtop’s role as the Official Pace Car of the Rolex
24 and the prospect of witnessing America’s
performance icon lead an international field of racing machines around
Daytona’s famed road course. To commemorate this historic
double-header, we would like to offer loyal Corvette owners a unique
opportunity to attend the Rolex
24 Hours at Daytona and personally
experience this great moment in Corvette racing history.

Congratulations once
again to CORSA Performance.
Last year their C5 Power-Pulse™
Pace (Indy) Car Edition exhaust system was selected by Chevrolet
Specialty Vehicles for the '98 C5
Indy 500 Pace Car. Leave
it to CORSA, once again Chevrolet
Specialty Vehicles chose their Touring Edition system - this time
for the C5 Corvette
Hardtop Pace Car for this years Rolex
24 Hours at Daytona GT2 endurance race later this month.
CORSA's
Touring Edition was chosen this time, but no matter, there's no loss in
performance in comparison to CORSA's
Pace (Indy) Car Edition, just a slightly different exhaust sound - and
both systems feature that great polished stainless steel appearance. Good
going CORSA!

The C5
Registry has learned that effective
immediately, the leather seating surfaces on all 1999
Corvettes, Convertible, Hardtop, and Coupe, have
been modified to enhance durability and reduce leather wear.
High quality vinyl will be used on the seat side bolsters - in
place of leather in both the standard base and sport bucket
seats. Leather will continue to be used on
all the remaining seat surfaces.
