Members – Tonight around 8:30 pm EST at the Mecum Auction in Kissimmee, the current owner of the 2001 Registry “C5 SHOW” Corvette (Lot T276) will auction it off to the highest bidder. Director Jake will be present for the auction and may speak about the history and the significance of the Registry “C5 SHOW” Corvette.

Director Jake Drennon with C5 Registry Show Car

Many of you will remember that this Registry “C5 SHOW” Corvette has been shown all around the USA and Western Europe. It has been paraded on various tracks including Daytona International Speedway and Le Mans, France. This Z51 optioned Millennium Yellow (black interior) 6-Speed Coupe has been around the world and back!

The Registry's “C5 SHOW” Corvette was present at the 2001 24 Hours of Daytona when the C5-Rs (the Chevrolet factory race Corvettes) made history by winning at Daytona. It was signed under the hood by the drivers of C5-R #2 Ron Fellows, Chris Kneifel , Franck Freon and Johnny O’Connell and also by the drivers of the C5-R #3 Andy Pilgrim, Dale Earnhardt Sr, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kelly Collins.

The story of this Corvette continues as it was shipped to France where it led the American contention of Corvettes through the downtown streets of Le Mans in the famous Parade des Pilotes with 250,000 screaming Frenchmen cheering it on!  After the C5-R's dominated at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (June 15 - 16, 2001), the Pratt & Miller victorious race team signed under the hood. It was also present in March at the 2001 Sebring Race.

This “C5 SHOW” #3 with its unique graphics package has been to the National Corvette Museum, Corvettes at Carlisle, Petite Le Mans at Road Atlanta, and to the NCRS event in Orlando. It was featured in the November 2001 issue of Corvette Fever magazine (page 31) leading a salute to victory at Le Mans!

Members, Tune in and watch a piece of Corvette history happen right before your eyes tonight between 8:00-9:00 pm EST on the Velocity Channel. The “C5 SHOW” is Lot T276.  http://velocity.discovery.com/tv-schedules/daily.html

General Motors will host an open house event at all 54 of its U.S. manufacturing locations and the Customer Care and After sales warehouses by the end of 2011 to give the American public the opportunity to learn more about the company’s people, products and plants.

Each location will pick a date for their facility and invite the community to attend as a way to show the importance of partnerships to the company’s success.

“Thanks to the support we have received from various stakeholder groups, we have a strong U.S. manufacturing footprint that employs thousands of people,” said Diana Tremblay, GM Vice President of Manufacturing and Labor Relations. “These open houses are our way of showing our appreciation to the communities where we operate.

“Our manufacturing processes and the highly skilled team members who work in the plants and warehouses are an impressive combination that enables us to produce high quality vehicles on a daily basis – a critical factor to any successful business model,” she said.

Since July 2009, GM has invested more than $3 billion in the United States and created or retained more than 7,900 jobs in 21 plant communities.

“I think it’s a great opportunity to see the skill and dedication of our UAW men and women who are proud of their accomplishments in building the finest vehicles not only in this country, but in the world,” said Joe Ashton, UAW Vice President-GM Department.

Although GM’s Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky is the only facility with a regularly scheduled tour program, GM locations across the country accommodate as many tour requests as possible from the community, the media and school groups.  Many UAW and GM employees volunteer to go into local classrooms to discuss the importance of manufacturing to the U.S. economy and the value of a strong math and science education.

The “Rocking Driver Seat” has lately become one of the most requested technical emails we receive and how one goes about correcting this nauseating feeling. In the past, you were at the mercy of the dealer in replacing a good portion of your seat’s mechanics in order to solve this issue.  But thanks to Michael Wilson And Company, LLC, a Corvette supplier for unique parts, the following 1997-2004 Seat Track Shim Repair Kit P/N 200905 is now available at an Official C5/C6 Registry Corporate Member near you!

Until now, your only option for eliminating this annoying seat rocking was to fork out over $540 per seat (plus labor) to a Chevrolet Dealer for new seat tracks. Now you can REPAIR instead of replace the seat tracks by installing (4) new self-lubricating shims in the seat tracks. These shims replace the original shims that deteriorate and wear out over time. Installation is NOT difficult and is easily accomplished by any self-respecting do-it-yourselfer.

This seat track repair kit includes (2) short-arm Stubby Torx wrenches for three reasons:

1. The larger wrench allows you access to the worm gear that is between the seat tracks (it’s the tight quarters that doesn’t allow normal hand tools to fit).

2. Most people will not have these size wrenches and they are not commonly available at local home stores.

3. It saves you the big expense of buying a complete tool kit to get these special tools. Step-by-step installation instructions are included to make the job easy to do.

1997-2004 Seat Track Repair Shim Kit P/N 200905

  • Repairs Seat Tracks On Cars With Electric Seats

  • Eliminates Seat Sliding Forward During Braking & Sliding Reward During Acceleration (Commonly Referred To As Seat Rocking)

  • Saves Expense Of Buying New Seat Tracks From GM For Over $540

  • Kit Includes (4) Self-Lubricating Shims & (2) Special Installation Tools

  • Step-By-Step Installation Instructions Included.

Red, White and Blue Corvette Owners – We need you!!
At the 2010 Corvettes at Carlisle show, we will again create a Corvette American Flag tribute.  This time we’re making it even better, with the addition of 54 cars for a total of 158 Corvettes needed.  The tribute will be on Friday, August 27th.

We’re looking for white, bright red and Admiral Blue (or similar) Corvettes.  T-tops are OK.  So are convertibles, if you’re willing to cover the top with a piece of red, white or blue fabric.

Flag participants need to be registered for the Fun Field.  Half of your Fun Field registration will be donated to Homes For Our Troops, which builds specially adapted homes for severely injured veterans.  This is a very worthwhile organization and we want to make sure we put together a great flag to support them and honor all veterans.  We need your help!

If you have any questions, or to apply for the flag, please email me at jennm@carlisleevents.com  or call 717-243-7855x113.  Please share with all of your Corvette friends.  Thank you!!

Tom Wallace Joins the Corvette Museum Motorsports Park Tea
( From the National Corvette Museum)
The dream of an educational and recreational track at the National Corvette Museum shifts into high gear.

Tom Wallace knows Corvettes. As a former Vehicle Line Executive for General Motors and Corvette Chief Engineer, he was at the wheel when the ZR1 Corvette was born, giving the world a 638 horsepower, 200+ mph, American-made super-car. Today, he's working on a new chapter of motorsports history and teaming up with the National Corvette Museum to promote and develop a 400-acre Motorsports Park.

The proposed Motorsports Park (not just for Corvettes) is being designed with the help of Pratt/Miller Engineering who is the company behind the ALMS Championship winning Corvette Racing team. Once their conceptual design is fine-tuned by a professional track designer, this track will be the only one in the world where professional and amateur drivers of all makes of cars and motorcycles can experience many of the signature features of the LeMans road course. Along with the track, (which can be reconfigured into four different courses) there will be an autocross/skid pad area, a drag strip and a karting track, allowing for everything from teen driver safety training to a wide variety of motorsports applications and events.

“What makes Tom an ideal member of the team,” says Wendell Strode, Executive Director of the Museum, “is that he is also a race car driver. Because of that, he knows what makes a track challenging for drivers and he understands what features would make it useful as a testing facility for race teams and manufacturers. In addition to that, Tom is a driving instructor so he understands the track’s importance as an educational facility for people of all skill levels. We are thrilled to have him on board with us.”

Tom's experience in racing goes back to his college days and includes drag racing, autocross, IMSA, Sebring 12 hour, Daytona 24 hour, SCCA Road Racing in GT1 (including several trips to the SCCA National Championship Runoffs) and Waterford Hills Road Racing. Today he is still very active in motorsports, along with his two sons.

Tom is enthusiastic about the project and looking forward to being involved. His first focus will be on fundraising, corporate sponsorships and planning for track operation.
“Since before my retirement in 2009, I have thought that a Motorsports Park at the Museum would raise the whole Corvette community to another level,” Tom said. “Initially, I’ll be working with Tom Blair in pursuing sponsors for the project. Tom (Blair) is an outstanding businessman and researcher and a good strategist of visionary business models.”

“What I’ll bring is my perspective as a racer. I know what makes a track great. I understand wheel to wheel, autocrossing, drag racing and karting. My background has given me insight into how different market segments will want to use this complex for competitive events, practice and educational purposes. I know a lot about driving and what drives people to want to get on a track. This will be the ideal facility for all kinds of applications, and a great place to showcase America’s sports car.”

Chevrolet Corvette - The Legend Goes On In Europe

During the Chevrolet press conference at the 80th Geneva International Motor Show, GM vice chairman Bob Lutz announced that the legendary Corvette sports car will continue to be available to European customers and more fully integrated into Chevrolet's European line-up.

"Our sales network will include select Chevrolet Europe retailers in addition to some of the current Corvette distributors, many of whom have been doing a fantastic job creating and serving a loyal and enthusiastic customer base," said Lutz.

The Chevrolet Corvette has been built and sold longer than any other sports car. Ever since its market introduction in 1953, the legendary American icon has been a dream car for generations of enthusiasts. In 2005, Chevrolet introduced the sixth-generation Corvette. In the following years, high performance versions, like the Corvette Z06 and the Corvette ZR1, were added to the line-up. Today, visitors of the Geneva motor show will find the new Corvette Grand Sport, another nameplate with great history, on the Chevrolet stand in hall 2.

"We are very proud to be responsible for the most iconic Chevrolet of all," said Wayne Brannon, Chevrolet Europe's president and managing director. "Like customers everywhere else in the world, European car buyers will see the Corvette lined-up alongside the rest of the Chevrolet range."

Members, I have just enjoyed a wonderful weekend at the Mecum Auto Auction here in Kissimmee, Florida. By all accounts, there were hundreds of gorgeous restored Corvettes and about anything else you have ever seen. Members, you have all told me over the past years about how many wonderful Corvettes you have owned back in the “good old days” and how much they were a part of your life during that time. I, too, bought my first new Corvette in 1978. It was a 25th Anniversary Edition Coupe. This Corvette has always meant a lot to my wife and I because we “Honeymooned” with it the following year. Like many of you, we sold it ten years later for that “extra money” to buy a home for our family.

This year’s Mecum Auto Auction was televised on the Discovery Channel HD Theater. I’m sure there will be re-runs on the Discovery Channel for months to come. You don’t want to miss this just due to the sheer beauty that these Corvettes brought to the stage when they were being auctioned. I just want all our members to know that the Mecum Auto Auction is an OUTSTANDING venue for buying or selling one’s prized Corvette possession. They treat you like family! Look for a Mecum Auto Auction http://mecum.com  that is coming to a town near you. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Corvettes of your past and see these beauties in pristine condition.

Click here, for a list of the Corvettes that were auctioned, and the one’s that sold, prices are duly noted!

Update: August 26: New Plant Manager Bob Parcell

Bob Parcell has been appointed plant manager for Bowling Green Assembly, effective October 1. Here is a little background on Bob:

Parcell began his GM career in 1979 as a General Motors Institute (GMI) co-op student at the Fisher Body Flint, Michigan Plant. In 1983 he was transferred to the Chevrolet-Pontiac-GM of Canada Grand Rapids Plant, where he held a variety of supervisory positions in Manufacturing, Plant Engineering and Maintenance. In 1994, Parcell transferred to the Mansfield, Ohio, Metal Center as Area Manager. In 1996, he was named Director of Manufacturing Engineering and in 1997 he was promoted to Assistant Plant Manager at Mansfield. In 2000, Parcell moved to the Metal Fabrication Division (MFD) headquarters in Troy, Michigan, when he was promoted to Operations Manager for Contiguous and Service Plants. The following year, he was named MFD Program Manager for Trucks, and in 2002 Parcell was promoted to Plant Manager of the Parma Metal Center.

In 2004, Parcell was named Plant Manager of GM Wentzville Assembly Center in Missouri, and in January 2006 took on his current role of President, CAMI Automotive. CAMI Automotive Inc. is an independently incorporated joint venture between Suzuki Motor Corporation and General Motors of Canada Ltd., located in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada.

Parcell received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from GMI (now Kettering University) in 1984 and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Phoenix in 1999.

Current Plant Manager Paul Graham will resume the role of plant manager at Arlington Assembly, GM’s only full-size SUV plant, which produces the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Cadillac Escalade and hybrid versions of the Tahoe, Yukon and Escalade. Bob and Paul are working through the details and timing of the transition.

Congratulations to both Paul and Bob in their assignments!

August 24
Only two short years after his arrival at Bowling Green, and only a year after moving from assistant plant manager to plant manager, Paul Graham announced his reassignment.

"Today as part of the restructuring of General Motors it was announced that I would become Plant Manager at Arlington Assembly on Oct. 1.

Bob Parcell, currently the President of CAMI Automotive, will be Bowling Green's new Plant Manager.

In my two years at Bowling Green Assembly I am grateful for the opportunity to be surrounded by such a talented and customer-focused team. During these unprecedented times we have seen many changes and overcome many challenges.

Through all of this we have continued to work together as a team, protecting the quality and excellence of our products.

We truly have a great product in the Corvette. I know, as do our customers, it is your hard work and dedication that makes the difference. We have a connection with our customer that we must continue to strengthen by listening to them and continuing to improve our product.

My family and I have truly enjoyed being part of the Bowling Green and Corvette community. Thank you for your dedication to building great cars, commitment to our customers and for your friendship. I am confident the team at Bowling Green Assembly will continue to accomplish great things.

Sincerely, Paul Graham"

Paul Graham began his GM career in 1980 as a college student intern at GM Truck and Bus in Flint Michigan. In 1986, he became an associate manufacturing engineer at the plant, then moved on to become supervisor of production in 1987 at the GM Ft. Wayne assembly plant in Indiana. Graham held several positions at the facility before being promoted to senior manufacturing project engineer in GM’s Truck and Bus Division in Pontiac Michigan in 1989. In 1992 Graham moved on to GM Baltimore assembly in Maryland to assume an assistant superintendent of maintenance position and over the years held positions of increasing responsibility at the plant before returning to GM Fort Wayne assembly to an area manager of body shop position in 1995. In 1997, Graham expatriated to Guanajuato Mexico to assume a platform program manager position with GM of Mexico. In 2000, he returned to the US and was appointed assistant plant manager of the GM Shreveport assembly plant in Louisiana. Graham was appointed assistant plant manager of the GM Oklahoma City facility in 2005. He was then appointed assistant plant manager of GM Bowling Green in 2006 and then plant manager upon Wil Cooksey’s retirement in 2008. Graham holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Kettering University and a master’s degree in project management from John Hopkins University.

The C5-C6 Registry wishes Paul well and success in his new position. Thank you Paul for your time at Bowling Green, and your hand in making Corvette the best of the best.

May 4
May 1, 2009 was the last day you could order a 2009 Corvette. Starting today, all new orders will be 2010 models.  Just as he promised, in Bowling Green, Corvette’s own Marketing Product Manager, Harlan Charles sent out the 2010 Order Guide to dealers today. You can download your copy by Clicking Here!

May 4
The Registry has just learned that Corvette number 1,500,000 will be built at the end of May as a 2009 model. The car will be a White Convertible, with a 023 Red/Black interior, and a Black top. Options include the 3LT package, Automatic Transmission, Performance Axle, F55 Magnetic Selective Ride Control, NPP Performance Exhaust, Navigation, and Chrome Wheels.

Corvette number 1 (1953) and Corvette number 1,000,000 (Built July 2, 1992) were both white with a red interior so... follows this one should be the same.

What would REALLY SET THIS CAR APART, would be to have Dave McClellan, Dave Hill, Tom Wallace, and  Tadge Juechter, the Corvette Chief Engineers who are still living, be at the unveiling of this special Corvette to sign the hood, or some special location on the car.

All the members of the C5/C6 Registry would like to congratulate Chevrolet, Corvette, the Bowling Green plant, and all the folks involved with this remarkable achievement !

April 1

New General Motors Corp. CEO Fritz Henderson is willing to take the struggling automaker into bankruptcy if necessary and signaled such a move could come quickly if GM determines it can't meet the government's 60-day deadline for more aggressive restructuring.

Henderson's candid comments Tuesday during his first press conference as GM's chief executive were in stark contrast to his predecessor, Rick Wagoner, who steadfastly maintained that bankruptcy would put GM out of business.

Henderson said bankruptcy is not his preferred option but GM will do "whatever it takes" to reinvent itself as a competitive automaker. "We will get the job done," he said. "We will do it out of court, or we will do it in court."

A bankruptcy filing would allow GM to take dramatic steps to wipe out debts and slash costs, affecting an array of stakeholders including shareholders, bondholders, suppliers, dealers and the United Auto Workers.

To satisfy the Obama administration's demand to cut deeper and faster, Henderson said GM will have to eliminate more debt and take restructuring steps that likely will result in more job losses and plant closures.

Henderson's comments came a day after President Obama's auto task force released its analysis of viability plans submitted by GM and Chrysler LLC to justify the $17.4 billion they have received in federal aid. The task force concluded that neither automaker had outlined a credible plan to profitability and suggested that a short-term bankruptcy may be the "best chance of success" for the automakers.

The White House told GM it must complete a more aggressive restructuring plan in the next 60 days; Chrysler has 30 days to conclude a partnership deal with Italy's Fiat SpA. GM and Chrysler have struggled to win agreements from the UAW and bondholders to reduce their debt, as required under their loan terms.

Ray Young, GM's chief financial officer, told CNBC Tuesday that GM pulled its offers to bondholders and the UAW. The automaker will now re-evaluate what needs to be done to address the government's request to restructure further and faster.

Henderson said if it became clear that GM won't succeed with its restructuring before the government's deadline, he would not delay bankruptcy.

A short-term bankruptcy filing, along with billions in government-provided debtor-in-possession financing, could alleviate GM's concerns that a court-ordered restructuring would lead to a liquidation of the company, damage the brand and scare away buyers.

Either way, GM needs a clean balance sheet to reposition the company so it can operate free of government oversight and aid.

GM's new bankruptcy stance comes amid revelations the Obama administration reportedly is considering using Section 363 of the federal bankruptcy code, which could allow for a fairly quick sale of assets.

But Harvard law professor Mark Roe, a top bankruptcy expert, said it would likely take significantly longer than the 30-day bankruptcy procedure described by the Obama administration for GM to deal with its many brands and dealers, as well as liabilities to the UAW and bondholders, even under a Section 363 procedure.

"If a company went into bankruptcy and its only problem was bond debt, 30 days might be pushing it, but that's thinkable," he said. "But if it's more complicated -- and GM is more complicated -- it's hard to do that unless you do it without addressing the structural problems."

Under Section 363 of the federal bankruptcy code, Roe said, the productive portions of GM could be split off and sold, with a "new GM" emerging from bankruptcy -- without the burdens of retiree health care liabilities or nearly $28 billion in bond debt.

Until the White House said GM needed a more aggressive restructuring plan, the automaker proposed focusing on four core brands -- Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, GMC -- and Pontiac would become a smaller, niche brand.

According to Bloomberg News, a meeting this weekend by GM's board will focus on the latest restructuring options.

March 30
GM - New Meaning - Government Motors!
President Barack Obama will give General Motors 60 days to craft a new survival plan without Chairman and Chief Executive Rick Wagoner, and set a 30-day deadline for Chrysler to either partner with Fiat SpA or shut down.

The White House has said Chrysler LLC and General Motors Corp. have not submitted acceptable plans to receive more federal loans.

Chrysler has been given 30 days to complete a partnership with Italian automaker Fiat SpA and could be destined for a sell-off if no deal is reached.

General Motors Corp. will get an additional 60 days of U.S. government help to undertake an even more aggressive restructuring effort in hopes of making it a viable company under President Barack Obama's plan to save the U.S. auto industry, expected to be unveiled today.

The new efforts could include an expedited, court-supervised restructuring to rid GM's book of billions in dollars of debts if the out-of-court process does not work, senior Obama administration officials said late Sunday on the condition of anonymity.

One scenario that could emerge is for GM to spend 60 days developing a more aggressive turnaround plan followed by a so-called quick rinse bankruptcy that could take as long as 30 days, a person briefed on the thinking said.

But all of this work will have to occur without GM Chairman and Chief Executive Rick Wagoner, who is resigning as part of the conditions for more help.

GM, which has lost nearly $70 billion over the past two years, has been fighting off bankruptcy since last fall when the U.S. auto market collapsed and sales fell to near 30-year lows.

But a senior administration official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the White House was confident that GM can "survive and thrive as a company," but that it will take a more significant restructuring to achieve that.

All stakeholders will be expected to give up more to make the plan work.

"This is an industry of critical importance to the country. We want to do everything we can to help it, and help the many workers who have jobs in it, and help the communities that are affected by it," a senior administration official said.

No price tag has been put on how much additional aid GM will get if it meets the administration's requirements.

The company had asked for an additional $16.6 billion on top of the $13.4 billion approved in December.

Obama is expected to announce plans for Chrysler and GM this morning. Rumors of a possible forced merger exist.

On Friday I was in Washington for a meeting with Administration officials.  In the course of that meeting, they requested that I “step aside” as CEO of GM, and so I have.

Fritz Henderson is an excellent choice to be the next CEO of GM.  Having worked closely with Fritz for many years, I know that he is the ideal person to lead the company through the completion of our restructuring efforts.  His knowledge of the global industry and the company are exceptional, and he has the intellect, energy, and support among GM’ers worldwide to succeed.  I wish him well, and I stand ready to support him, and interim Non-Executive Chairman Kent Kresa, in every way possible.

I also want to extend my sincerest thanks to everyone who supported GM and me during my time as CEO.  I deeply appreciate the excellent counsel and commitment of the GM Board and the strong support of our many partners including our terrific dealers, suppliers, and community leaders. I am grateful as well to the union leaders with whom I have had the chance to work closely to implement numerous tough but necessary restructuring agreements.

Most important of all I want to express my deepest appreciation to the extraordinary team of GM employees around the world.  You have been a tremendous source of inspiration and pride to me, and I will be forever grateful for the courage and commitment you have shown as we have confronted the unprecedented challenges of the past few years.  GM is a great company with a storied history.  Ignore the doubters because I know it is also a company with a great future.

The Obama administration asked Rick Wagoner, the chairman and CEO of General Motors, to step down and he agreed, a White House official said.

On Monday, President Barack Obama is to unveil his plans for the auto industry, including a response to a request for additional funds by GM and Chrysler. The plan is based on recommendations from the Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry, headed by the Treasury Department.

The White House confirmed today Wagoner was leaving at the government's request after The Associated Press reported his immediate departure, without giving a reason.

General Motors issued a statement last night that did not officially confirm Wagoner's departure.

"We are anticipating an announcement soon from the Administration regarding the restructuring of the U.S. auto industry. We continue to work closely with members of the Task Force and it would not be appropriate for us to speculate on the content of any announcement," the company said.

The surprise announcement about the classically iconic American corporation is perhaps the most vivid sign yet of the tectonic change in the relationship between business and government in this era of subsidies and bailouts.

Wagoner has been CEO for 8 years and at GM for more than 30. It is not yet clear who would replace him, or what role the administration would play in that process.

Industry sources had said the White House planned very tough medicine in Monday's announcement, which turned out to be an understatement. And it went to the very top. The measures to be imposed by the government will have a dramatic effect on workers, unions, suppliers, bondholders, shareholders, retirees and the communities where plants are located, the sources said.

Obama said Friday in an interview with CBS’s “Face the Nation,” broadcast Sunday, that the carmakers were going to have to do more.

“There's been some serious efforts to deal with a combination of long-standing problems in the auto industry,” the president told host Bob Schieffer. “What we're trying to let them know is that we want to have a successful auto industry, U.S. auto industry. We think we can have a successful U.S. auto industry. But it's got to be one that's realistically designed to weather this storm and to emerge at the other end much more lean, mean and competitive than it currently is.

“And that's gonna mean a set of sacrifices from all parties involved — management, labor, shareholders, creditors, suppliers, dealers. Everybody's gonna have to come to the table and say it's important for us to take serious restructuring steps now in order to preserve a brighter future down the road."

The Obama administration calls its task force “a cabinet-level group that includes the secretaries of Transportation, Commerce, Labor and Energy. It will also include the chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, the EPA administrator, and the director of the White House Office of Energy and Climate Change. The Task Force will be led by Treasury Secretary [Tim] Geithner and [National Economic Council] Director Larry Summers.”

The panel’s chief adviser is Steven Rattner, a well-known investment banker and former New York Times reporter

Bob Lutz moves to Senior Advisor Role;

Will Retire at End of 2009 - Tom Stephens Becomes Vice Chairman-Global Product Development.

GM Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner today announced that Robert A. Lutz, GM Vice Chairman – Global Product Development, will transition to a new role effective April 1, 2009 as Vice Chairman and Senior Advisor. Lutz, 76, will provide strategic input into GM’s global design and key product initiatives until his retirement at the end of 2009. He will continue to report to Wagoner.

Wagoner also announced that effective April 1, 2009 the GM Board of Directors elected Thomas G. Stephens, Vice Chairman – Global Product Development, reporting to President and Chief Operating Officer Fritz Henderson. Stephens, 60, is currently Executive Vice President, Global Powertrain and Global Quality. In this new assignment, Stephens will maintain his responsibility for overseeing GM’s global quality activity.

Concurrent with this appointment, GM is restructuring its global powertrain group to integrate powertrain functional activities into their respective global GM functions. Accordingly, in his new role, Stephens will have responsibility for global powertrain engineering, in addition to global design, product engineering, product planning and program management. Powertrain manufacturing will report to Gary Cowger, Group Vice President of GM Global Manufacturing and Labor Relations. Other staffs that support the GM Powertrain organization will be integrated into their respective global functions. These moves represent another important step in GM’s restructuring initiative to create a leaner, more efficient organization.

“Bob Lutz was already a legendary automotive product guy when he rejoined GM in 2001,” Wagoner said, “and he’s added to that by leading the creation of a string of award-winning vehicles for GM during his time here. His 46 years of experience in the global automotive business have been invaluable to us. I’ve personally learned a great deal from Bob and have very much enjoyed the time we’ve worked together,” Wagoner added. “I’m looking forward to Bob’s continued contributions to GM for the remainder of 2009 – and I know the impact of his efforts leading GM global product development will continue for years to come.

“Tom Stephens is the perfect guy to take the reins of GM’s global product development,” Wagoner continued. “He’s had extensive experience in virtually every aspect of our global product development activities. With his 40 years at GM, Tom has an extraordinary understanding of our products and our organization, and is highly respected worldwide. I’m confident that with Tom’s passion for great products and vast knowledge of advanced propulsion, he will continue to raise the bar in executing outstanding GM cars and trucks.

Corvette Racing Announces 2009 Driver Lineup

Marcel Fassler and Antonio Garcia to Join Corvette Racing Roster for Three Endurance Events

DETROIT - Corvette Racing will have a new driver lineup for the 2009 American Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Antonio Garcia will join defending ALMS GT1 champions Johnny O'Connell and Jan Magnussen in the No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6.R for the Sebring 12-hour, Le Mans 24-hour, and 1000-mile Petit Le Mans endurance races. Marcel Fassler will be teamed with 2005-07 GT1 champions Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta in the No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6.R in the three long-distance races. Canadian Ron Fellows, a member of Corvette Racing since its inception, will continue with the team in an advisory and ambassadorial role.

The new additions to Corvette Racing's driver roster have extensive experience in world-class GT competition. Garcia, 28, of Barcelona, Spain, has raced with distinction in the European Touring Car Championship, the World Touring Car Championship, and the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series. He was part of the winning GT1 team in the 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans, and recently shared in an overall victory in the 2009 Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Fassler, 32, of Einsiedeln, Switzerland, has competed in the DTM, the European Le Mans Series, A1 Grand Prix, and the FIA GT championship. Driving a Corvette for the Phoenix Carsport team in the FIA GT series, Fassler won the prestigious Spa 24-hour race in 2007, and continued that success in 2008 with five pole positions and a win in Adria, Italy, finishing fourth in the championship.

"Antonio and Marcel have the ability, the experience, and the mindset that we look for in a Corvette Racing driver," said GM Road Racing Group manager Steve Wesoloski. "We've seen their speed on the track, and we know they have the discipline and team-oriented attitude that's essential for success in endurance racing. Our international driver lineup reflects the global marketing objectives of the Corvette Racing program."

Corvette Racing will run in the GT1 class in the season-opening Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring and the Grand Prix of Long Beach in preparation for its 10th participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Following its return from France, Corvette Racing will begin its transition to the GT2 category at the Mid-Ohio round of the ALMS as the team prepares for a full-season GT2 program in 2010

2010 Chevrolet Camaro RS
One very passionate Camaro enthusiast at the 2009 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction will come away with the keys to the first regular retail production-built unit of Chevy’s all-new, 21st Century Sports Car. This first Camaro built for regular retail production will have a VIN ending with 100001*.

Chevrolet ceased production of the fourth-generation of their vaunted sportscar in 2002. Four years later, Camaro appeared as a surprise concept vehicle at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The new production Camaro remains steadfastly true to that concept, with an eye-catching design reminiscent of the storied 1969 Camaro, but equipped with modern technology and a GM-estimated 27 MPG** highway when equipped with the available V6 engine. Importantly, the winning bidder will have the ability to spec and order their Camaro to their liking, choosing from several colors, V6 or V8 engines, a manual or automatic transmission, and various trim packages and free-flow options.

The vehicle will be built on the first day of retail production -- scheduled for early 2009.*** All net proceeds from the sale will benefit the American Heart Association, a national voluntary health agency whose mission is: "Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke." The association's impact goal is to reduce coronary heart disease, stroke and risk by 25 percent by 2010.

Please join GM, Chevrolet, Barrett-Jackson and the American Heart Association in pursuit of this very worthwhile effort, and be the first to own Chevy’s 21st Century Sports Car, the 2010 Chevy Camaro.

Members, rumors have been flying for months that there will be a Special Edition Corvette coming out in early 2009. WELL, THEY ARE COMING !

The latest gossip focuses on NOT one, but two special editions for the Spring 2009 production time frame. One of them is believed to be a C6 “Racer Edition” with a very attractive price. Three different colors are rumored to be in the running for this C6 “Racer.” A very unique feature for this “Racer Edition” will be the inclusion of the European Differential Cooler coupled with the Z51Performance Handling Package.

The other Special Edition will be a tribute to Corvette and the GT Racing Series. This Special Edition will be a LIMITED run available in two colors and will allow the purchaser to be able to equip it as they would like. What makes this so unique is that NO two (due to the limited numbers produced) may be alike based on how they are ordered and equipped.

Tom has always been a fantastic friend of the Official C5/C6 Registry and its members.

His leadership of Corvette over the last few years has been outstanding! Having a “Racer” at the helm of our beloved Sports Car has certainly shown through with the recent introduction of the 2009 ZR1 as a true American made Race Car…we mean, “Gentleman’s Corvette”!

Tom shared with us some time ago that he has always been committed to Corvette and its lifestyle, and being promoted to Chief Engineer of Corvette was certainly a dream come true!

From all of us at the Official C5/C6 Registry, A BIG C5/C6 THANK YOU goes out for the difference you have made in Corvette and the exciting Corvette’s you have brought us!

A little bit about Tom:
Tom Wallace was born in
Pittsburgh, PA. He began his GM career as a cooperative student with Buick Motor Division in 1970. He held several engineering positions focusing on engine technology and played a key role in the development of the turbocharged Buick Grand National coupes of the early '80s. Wallace most recently was vehicle line executive for Small/Midsize Trucks.

After competing in amateur drag racing and gymkhana, Wallace started road racing with the Sports Car Club of America more than 30 years ago. He raced professionally in the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) American Challenge series in 1978-79 in several endurance races, including the Sebring 12-hour and Daytona 24-hour events. Corvette Racing Announces Future Plans
Corvette Racing will aim for a sixth victory in the GT1 class in the 2009 24 Hours of Le Mans before entering the GT2 category in the second half of the American Le Mans Series 2009 season. Corvette Racing will launch a full-season assault in the restructured GT division in 2010.

Corvette Racing representatives announced the plans today in a media teleconference.

Corvette Racing will run a limited schedule in the GT1 class in the first half of the 2009 ALMS season as it prepares for its 10th participation in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June. The team will race in the GT1 class in the season-opening Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring and the popular Grand Prix of Long Beach. Following its return from the classic 24-hour endurance race in France, Corvette Racing will compete in the GT2 category in selected ALMS events in 2009 in preparation for a full-season program under new international GT class regulations in 2010.

"Corvette Racing will be well positioned for the future of production-based sports car racing worldwide with the plans we are announcing today," said Steve Wesoloski, GM Racing Road Racing Group manager. "The international regulations are converging around a single, global GT class, and we intend to continue Corvette's motorsports heritage by racing against manufacturers and marques that Corvette competes with in the marketplace.

"The GT1 class has been a platform for GM Racing and our partners to develop the most technically sophisticated race cars in our history," Wesoloski said. "We intend to apply the tremendous success we have had in the GT1 category to make the next-generation Corvette C6.R a strong contender in the new GT class."

Manufacturers currently represented in the ALMS GT2 class or confirmed for future participation include Ferrari, Porsche, Aston Martin, BMW, Ford, Dodge, and Panoz. Other manufacturers produce high-performance cars that could compete in the new GT category.

"In accordance with the regulations, the new version of the Corvette C6.R race car will be available to independent teams," Wesoloski said. "Corvette and Chevrolet are global brands, and we look forward to seeing production-based Corvette race cars competing in series around the world under the leadership of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) and the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA)."

The new GT Corvette C6.R race car will be based on the production Corvette's chassis and body design. A 6.0-liter version of the LS7.R small-block V-8 will power the Corvette GT2 entry in the transitional 2009 season. A new naturally aspirated 5.5-liter version of the production GM small-block V-8 will be developed to meet the new GT regulations that will take effect in 2010. The chassis and powertrain specifications of the new Corvette GT entry will be submitted to the ACO and FIA for homologation approval.

"Competing in GT2 will be a true test of our team's determination, talent and technology," said Doug Fehan, Corvette Racing program manager. "The level of competition in the category is already fierce, and that promises to become more intense with more manufacturers and top-tier teams. We've explored alternative paths, and we believe that competing in GT is the right road for Corvette Racing to take in the future.

"We will continue our commitment to cellulosic E85R ethanol racing fuel in the current GT1 Corvette C6.R and the next-generation Corvette C6.R that will compete in the new GT class " Fehan said. "Corvette Racing's green racing initiative is proof of our commitment to using alternative fuels at the highest levels of motorsports."

Mid America Motorworks began Drive Your Corvette to Work Day in 2000 as a way to celebrate the birthday of the classic car. Over the years, participants have included a wide range of commuters, from senior aerospace technicians to city hall employees. 2007 promises to another uniquely American spectacle as Corvette commuters take to the highways and byways in their favorite ride.

The registry congratulates Jim on his appointment which apparently has him engineering the current Corvette line, right up to the "SS" or "Blue Devil".

Members - Recently we discovered that the Corvette Assembly Plant has instituted a DIRECT ONLINE FEEDBACK CENTER for you to talk about your Corvette. We made some calls and found out that this was not just an exercise in e-mailing into cyber space. We have been informed that there is a team of five individuals who will be reading ALL of these important posts sent directly in to the Bowling Green Assembly Plant about your C6 or C5 (yes, they do want to hear from C5 owners!) and redirecting them to the proper individuals regarding your input.

That is why, after you sign in with your model year and the last eight digits of your VIN number, you will have an opportunity to inform them of your concerns, or praise them for the 99% of your Corvette that they produced correctly! After you have done this, the next screen will ask you for your contact information so that they can get back in touch with you if your concern or praise warrants it.

So take advantage of the opportunity and go to:
www.bowlinggreenassemblyplant.com/survey/index.htm  to tell the folks at the Plant what you think of the amazing work they do, building our Corvettes each and every day!

Members, over the last ten years that the Registry has been around, many, many of you have asked how you can get in touch of someone at GM! Well, here it is - it is for you to use and I assured the folks at the Plant that our members would take full advantage of an opportunity to voice their ideas. I can't speak for other sports car companies, but this is a fantastic owner resource that Corvette has made available to you to give direct information back to them. And the really big news is, they REALLY want to hear from you!!!

Making for and exciting race-----
Corvette and Aston Martin went toe-to-toe in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, trading blows through a grueling day and night of racing. When the battle finally ended at 5 p.m. today, Corvette Racing had won the GT1 class in the world's greatest sports car race for the fifth time in six years.

The victorious No. 64 Compuware CORVETTE C6.R driven by Oliver Gavin, Olivier Beretta and Jan Magnussen finished fourth overall and scored Corvette Racing's 12th podium finish since the team first came to Le Mans in 2000. It was the trio's third consecutive class victory at Le Mans and their fourth straight endurance racing win, a streak that includes last year's 24 Hours of Le Mans, Petit Le Mans and the 12 Hours of Sebring. Corvette Racing extended its perfect finishing record in the 24 Hours of Le Mans to seven consecutive years and Corvette became the winningest manufacturer in recent GT history at Le Mans

24 Hours of Le Mans GT1 Top Finishers:
Pos./Car No./Drivers/Car/Laps

  • 1. (64) Gavin/Beretta/Magnussen, Corvette C6.R, 355

  • 2. (007) Enge/Turner/Piccini, Aston Martin DBR9, 350

  • 3. (72) Policand/Goueslard/Alphand, Corvette C5-R, 346

  • 4. (62) Piquet Jr./Garcia/Brabham, Aston Martin DBR9, 343

  • 5. (009) Sarrazin/Lamy/Ortelli, Aston Martin DBR9, 342 6.

  • (66) Mowlem/Borcheller/Fittipaldi, Saleen S7R, 337

  • 7. (63) Fellows/O'Connell/Papis, Corvette C6.R, 327

The Corvettes started third and sixth in the GT1 class when the 49-car field took the green flag at 5 p.m. Gavin took the first stint in the No. 64 Compuware Corvette C6.R and O'Connell was first up in the No. 63 Compuware Corvette C6.R.

Gavin quickly moved from third to second on the first lap, passing the No. 007 Aston Martin and hounding the class-leading No. 009 Aston Martin, while O'Connell held position in fifth. On the third lap, O'Connell passed the No. 66 Saleen S7R for fourth. When the first full-course caution period began at 5:20 p.m., the Corvettes and Aston Martins all made early pit stops for fuel. Quick pit work by the Corvette Racing crew put Gavin in the GT1 lead and O'Connell second.

At 6:08 p.m., the No. 63 Corvette C6.R spun on a slick track as O'Connell entered the Porsche Curves, damaging the wing, rear bodywork and left-front suspension. The car came into the garage at 6:10 p.m. The crew replaced the damaged wing and suspension, and 11 minutes later Max Papis took the No. 63 Corvette back into battle. After half a lap, Papis radioed to the crew, "Everything's fine.

At the midpoint of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Corvette Racing's twin C6.Rs were running second and sixth in the GT1 class and sixth and 12th overall. The No. 64 Compuware Corvette C6.R driven by Oliver Gavin, Olivier Beretta and Jan Magnussen was two minutes behind the class-leading No. 009 Aston Martin and cutting the deficit. The No. 63 Compuware Corvette C6.R of Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell and Max Papis encountered misfortune in the form of a clutch problem and a three-minute stop-and-go penalty that thwarted its comeback from an early-race incident.

Lance Armstrong to drive Indy 500 Pace Car

lance armstrongSeven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong will be the pace car driver for this year's Indianapolis 500, TV station WRTV reported Tuesday, citing sources it did not name.

To date, No official announcement regarding the pace car driver for this year's race has been made.

Corvette Racing Wins Sebring 12-Hour Race!Corvette Racing ALMS Road America 8/21/05
Corvette Racing success last resulted in having 125 extra pounds added to the cars, but even so....Corvette Racing celebrates a victory in the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

The No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6-R driven by Oliver Gavin, Olivier Beretta and Jan Magnussen ran like clockwork throughout the 12-hour endurance race, finishing first in the GT1 class and third overall with a one-lap margin of victory over their rivals in the No. 009 Aston Martin DBR9. Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell and Max Papis finished fourth in the GT1 division and seventh overall in the No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6-R following a hard-fought battle with the No. 007 Aston Martin in the closing laps.

At the halfway point of the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, Corvette Racing's twin C6.R race cars were running first and second in the GT1 class and fourth and fifth overall. Then one minute into the second half of the 12-hour race, the No. 3 Compuware Corvette went to the paddock with a gearbox problem.

The No. 3 Corvette Racing crew replaced the gears in the transaxle. Fellows was back in the car at 6:27 into the race, the engine was started at 6:29, and the car drove out of the paddock at 6:31 to a standing ovation by several hundred spectators who had gathered at the Corvette Racing transporter. Congratulations  on a GREAT Win

C5/C6 Registry Le Mans Trip Coverage
What an exciting article by our own Walt Thurn in the April 2006 Vette Magazine, pages 67-71 covering the Registry's Le Mans Trip of a Lifetime to Europe. Walt has some fabulous photos that you may not have seen as well as a wonderful chronicle of the Le Mans travelers. Many Corvette owners fantasize about driving their cars in Europe, but that rarely happens in real life. But in this case, the fantasy came true. If you are not a subscriber, be sure to pick a copy of this issue.
Thanks, Walt, for getting the word out there about the Registry!

"TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is really proving to be a win for everyone,"

The month of May marks the one-year anniversary of TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline. In the past twelve months, six fuel marketers, both large and small, have joined the TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline program. They are: ChevronTexaco, QuikTrip, ConocoPhillips, Shell, Entec Stations, and MFA Oil Company. Together they represent about 35 percent of all the gasoline sold in the U.S., amounting to about 48.5 billion gallons annually.

"TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is really proving to be a win for everyone," said Tom Stephens, group vice president of GM Powertrain. "Customers see optimum fuel economy and performance and have fewer fuel deposit issues. Fuel marketers are able to differentiate their product by advertising their gasoline meets TOP TIER standards. Better fuel quality also equates to improved emissions which are obviously good for everyone."

The U.S. EPA requires a minimal amount of detergent additive in all gasoline. However, the level is often not sufficient to prevent engine deposits from forming. TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline helps keep engines cleaner than gasoline containing the minimum amount required by government regulation, and, thus, helps provide optimal fuel economy, performance, and reduced emissions.

TOP TIER standards were developed by BMW, General Motors, Honda and Toyota and were aimed at reversing the national trend toward lower gasoline additive concentration.

GM Statement Regarding NHTSA Final Rulemaking on Tire Pressure Monitors
General Motors is a leader in installing tire pressure monitors and has more vehicles equipped with the devices than any automaker. GM intends to be ready to comply with the new federal requirement when it goes into effect in September 2005.

GM has produced more than 4 million cars and trucks with tire pressure monitors since 1987.

GM uses two systems - one that monitors tire pressure with the antilock brake system (ABS), and one with separate sensors mounted in each wheel. In both systems, a warning light on the instrument panel or a message displayed on the driver information center, along with an audible warning, alerts the driver to check the air pressure in their tires.

"GM has focused on tire safety for almost four decades, beginning in 1968 with the opening of our Tire and Wheel Systems Laboratory," said Robert Lange, executive director of structure and safety integration. "We have 70 engineers and technicians working to ensure that original equipment tires perform safely and effectively from the time that car leaves the dealership."

To all of our Members attending the North American International Auto Show in Detroit:
Because Friday we are going to the Ford Museum and will not be back at the hotel during the time designated to pick up our event shirts, Colleen Egan, Dan and Jake will be in the lobby from 10:00 am until 10:50 am on Friday to hand out shirts. Colleen had set aside 5:00 - 6:30 on Friday evening to pick up the shirts and you can still do that if you are there, but those attending the Museum tour and Ed Duprey's celebration won't be back in time for that. For the very few of you who have not received your shirts before that time, we will have the remaining shirts available for you on Saturday morning from 6:30 - 6:45, before we board the busses. DON'T BE LATE!!!

January 10
C5/C6 Registry Members Storm Detroit for the 2006 Z06 Unveiling Registry Members, 1-10-05 as of this date, this is our MOST RECENT UPDATE OF OUR PLANNED ACTIVITIES IN DETROIT. We've got some really big things happening in Detroit this week and hope all of you will join us!

Don't forget to pack your NAME BADGES and FRS radios for road trips.

Maps to all of the events LISTED BELOW will be available from Dan and Jake in the Somerset Inn lobby at 4:00 pm on Thursday. We will leave extra maps at the front desk for late comers.

Les Stanford Chevrolet located at 21711 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, MI (Scott Montgomery can be contacted at 800-699-8388) will be hosting a reception at the dealership with hors d'oeuvres. David Hill will be there with some “behind the scenes” discussions about the C6 Z06. We will leave the hotel at 6:00 pm to caravan there.

We will be taking a road trip to the wonderful Henry Ford Museum. (The Heritage Center was closed for a private party.) We plan to leave the hotel at 11:00 am and drive the 29 miles to the Henry Ford Museum. For members who would like to have dinner with Dan and Jake, they have arranged to eat at Cheli’s Chili Sports Bar right down the road from the Henry Ford Museum at promptly 4:15 pm. We’ll then caravan to Ed and Shirley Duprey’s home (at approximately 6:00 pm) for a “C6 Z06 Unveiling Party” with another one of Shirley’s famous Corvette cakes. Join all of us as we watch the Black Tie Charity Preview live from Cobo Hall.

NOW FOR THE BIG EVENT!!! Arrangements have been made to allow us in to Cobo Convention Center one hour BEFORE the general public! So members, we need to get an early start. We will meet in the lobby of the Somerset Inn at 6:30 am to get our event shirts and tickets. (VERY IMPORTANT YOU ARE ON TIME FOR THIS!) We will then board the bus at 7:00 am sharp for the trip to Cobo Hall. We will enter at 8:00 am for our private preview of the C6 Z06 and listen to David Hill speak about this fabulous Corvette. You will then have until 1:00 pm to check out the new C6 Z06 Corvette and the rest of the show. The bus will leave at 1:00 pm SHARP for the Motor City Casino where you can lunch (Dutch treat) in one of the restaurants or at a buffet ($15.95). At 2:30 pm SHARP we’ll board the bus for the trip back to the Somerset Inn. NOTE: You might want to buy an auto show program which will be available at the center. (A great keepsake for this event.)

Cobo Hall Rule - NO COATS can be worn on the show floor. They have a coat check in the lobby, but information from our contacts in Detroit have said this leads to a huge line to check your coat and you will be late getting in with us. We are on a tight schedule and will be going in at 8:00 am SHARP with or without you. The bus company says WE CAN leave our coats on the bus because the driver stays on the bus all day. Word to the wise--Just don't leave any valuables in your coat pockets. Our friends in Detroit recommend that you wear clothing in layers and not take a coat at all.

Cobo Hall Rule - NO CAMERA BAGS allowed in the show floor area. If you are taking a camera, carry it loose and not in a carry bag. Be sure you have plenty of film with you because there is no place to buy film there.

Purse recommendation - DON'T take it with you. Fanny packs or filling your pockets is a much better idea. Let's not leave purses on the bus, just leave it at home. We're not sure if they inspect every purse, but we would expect them to do that due to heightened security around the country. Make it easier for yourself and for moving the group through the gate quicker and just leave the Gucci bag at home.

Remember this is a HUGE public event in a big city. Stay together, try not to wander off and get lost. We are VIP guests now of GM and David Hill, let's show them we deserve it. Be alert, think about what you're doing and how it affects the group’s ability to stick to the schedule. And as always.... HAVE C6 FUN!!

We hope you will join us for dinner at Ginopolis' on the Grill located at 27815 Middlebelt, Farmington Hills (248-851-7193). We had a fabulous time there last year! And YES, there will be a cash bar at 6:00 pm and dinner will be served at 6:30 pm. Nate Love with Corvette Marketing will be our guest speaker and you won't want to miss his presentation.

Dan and Jake will be leaving on a very early flight back to sunny warm Florida. But members, feel free to return at your leisure to visit the rest of the 2005 North American International Auto Show which opens their doors for your viewing pleasure from 9:00 am until 10:00 pm, or until it's time for you to return home. Your event ticket from Saturday is good for the whole week.

Corvette C6-R Race Car Launches For 2005

C5-R Successor Built upon 50+ Years of History, Three Le Mans Titles, 35 Victories and Four Championships

DETROIT – The brand-new Corvette C6-R race car will debut at the 12 Hours of Sebring in March 2005 after a full year of rigorous testing and development. The two-car, factory-backed Chevrolet sports car program will compete in the production-based GT1 class (formerly GTS) of American Le Mans Series as well as the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans in France, a race where the Corvette has won its class for three out of the past four years. The new race car is the most technically advanced sports car ever developed by General Motors, culling years of experience from the dominant Corvette C5-R as well as the advancements brought forth from the next-generation Corvette C6 and Z06 production models.

“The Corvette C6-R is the best sports car we’ve ever built and it has been our privilege to develop it alongside the new Corvette Z06,” said Harry Turner , GM’s group manager for road racing. “History will remember the C5-R as one of the best sports racing cars of all-time and we’ve set the bar high for the C6-R. With the new C6 chassis and body structure as our starting point, we’re already ahead. We left no stone unturned in the development of this new car and we are looking forward to racing it in front of the world in 2005.”

Like the C5-R before it, the Corvette C6-R starts from production roots: the same hydroformed frame rails that roll down the assembly line at the Corvette plant in Bowling Green , Kentucky are sourced for the structure of the race car. With the new C6 production model measuring shorter in overall length (but with a longer wheelbase), race car engineers faced a new set of numbers in which to achieve their goals to make the car faster on the 180-mph Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans and other high-speed circuits.

“At first glance, the shortened front and rear overhangs on the C6 would seem to present a challenge in developing a racecar with maximum aerodynamic downforce,” said Steve Wesoloski , program engineering manager for Corvette Racing. “However, the low drag features on the C6, such as the sleek body and flush headlamps, lend themselves to an easy task of converting the production design into a low-drag race car.”

Adding a rear wing and a front splitter enabled the team to develop a package that achieves a lift-to-drag ratio better than that of the C5-R. Through a combination of Computational Fluid Dynamic studies and on-track testing, the end result will be an aerodynamically balanced package, tunable to the low drag demands of Le Mans or the high downforce requirements of Mosport.

The phrase “technology transfer” has never been more appropriate than when used to describe the matched set of Corvette C6-R and Corvette Z06. Lessons learned on the track have benefited the Z06, just as GM’s vast resources have enriched the C6-R race car. Both cars are powered by 7-liter small-block V-8 engines with dry-sump lubrication systems, CNC-ported cylinder heads, titanium valves and connecting rods, forged steel crankshafts, and plate-honed cylinder bores. While the components and specifications of the street and competition engines are tailored to their specific environments, the thought process behind them is identical.

The same six drivers that piloted the C5-Rs to an historical undefeated season in 2004 will return to the track in 2005: Ron Fellows, Johnny O’Connell and Max Papis will drive the #3 Corvette C6-R and Oliver Gavin , Olivier Beretta and Jan Magnussen will drive the #4 Corvette C6-R.
