GM Press Release: DETROIT, Feb. 5, 2002 – The 86th running of the Indianapolis 500 on May 26, 2002, will bring together two powerful symbols that stir the imaginations of enthusiasts around the world. Chevrolet’s Corvette, an international performance icon, has been named Official Pace Car of this year’s Indianapolis 500, the world’s most prestigious open-wheel race.

Chevrolet will pace the Indy 500 a record 13th time, and Corvette will perform the pace car duties for the fifth time since 1978 – the most pace car appearances by a single brand.

Logo Trade Mark Chevrolet Division - General MotorsIndy 500 will begin 50th anniversary celebration
“This year’s Memorial Day classic will showcase America’s favorite sports car at the greatest spectacle in racing,” said Corvette Brand Manager Rick Baldick. “This is a milestone event because it will signal the start of a yearlong celebration leading up to Corvette’s 50th anniversary in 2003.”

“Chevrolet and Corvette have a proud and storied history with the Indianapolis 500,” said Tony George, president and CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “We look forward to having the 2002 Corvette pacing the greatest race in the world.”

Chevrolet returns to Indy car compeititon with all-new Chevy Indy V8 engine
The 86th running of the Indianapolis 500-mile race will also mark the return of Chevrolet to the most hallowed ground in American motorsports. Chevrolet will compete in the Indy 500 for the first time since 1993 with the all-new Chevy Indy V8 racing engine. Chevrolet won 86 Indy car races, including six Indianapolis 500 victories, and five series championships in 1986-93.

“We are proud that Corvette has been named Official Pace Car of the 86th Indianapolis 500,” said Kurt Ritter, Chevrolet general manager. “The excitement that builds at Indianapolis Motor Speedway from opening day until the checkered flag falls mirrors the excitement that is building around Corvette’s 50th anniversary.

“Chevrolet’s racing heritage began with company co-founder Louis Chevrolet, who gained international fame as an engineer and race car driver,” Ritter noted. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the bronze statue of Louis Chevrolet that stands outside the Hall of Fame Museum was smiling at the news about Corvette and Chevy’s return to the Brickyard.”

Coast-to-coast events will celebrate Corvette’s 50th anniversary
Events celebrating Corvette’s golden anniversary are planned from coast to coast. The Historic Motorama coordinated by the National Corvette Museum (www.corvettemuseum.com) on June 24-28 will consist of one example from each production year to honor the more than 1.2 million Corvettes that have been produced since 1953.

Corvette will be the honored marque at the Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races on August 16-18, 2002 at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, Calif. (www.montereyhistoric.com).

Production Corvette incorporates advanced technology
The Corvette that provides the platform for the Indy 500 Pace Car is equipped with a standard 5.7-liter LS1 V8 engine that produces 350 horsepower in production trim. Corvette incorporates advanced technology such as hydroformed frame rails, Active Handling System, driver-selectable suspension modes and optional Head-Up Display.

“The cars that compete in the Indianapolis 500 are finely built machines that are designed for maximum speed,” said Baldick. “Corvette is just as purposeful in its own right. For 49 years, Corvette has remained true to its two-seat sports car heritage. Corvette combines power, performance, handling and technology – while delivering the maximum amount of driving pleasure to those who value high performance.”

When Corvette leads the field of 33 drivers to the green flag on May 26, it will be the start of something big – for racing fans and for Corvette enthusiasts around the world.

Chevrolet has paced the Indianapolis 500 12 times, more than any other brand:

  • 1999 Monte Carlo (Jay Leno, driver)
  • 1998 Corvette (Parnelli Jones, driver)
  • 1995 Corvette (Jim Perkins, driver)
  • 1993 Camaro Z28 (Jim Perkins, driver)
  • 1990 Beretta (Jim Perkins, driver)
  • 1986 Corvette (Gen. Chuck Yeager, driver)
  • 1982 Camaro Z28 (Jim Rathmann, driver)
  • 1978 Corvette (Jim Rathmann, driver)
  • 1969 Camaro (Jim Rathmann, driver)
  • 1967 Camaro (Mauri Rose, driver)
  • 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air (T.H. Keating, driver)
  • 1948 Chevrolet Fleetmaster (Wilbur Shaw, driver)

Team Cadillac News:
Team Cadillac announced today that Finnish driver JJ Lehto and Frenchman Christophe Tinseau will join the team at this year's classic endurance races in Sebring, Le Mans and Road Atlanta (Petit Le Mans). Lehto will team up with Eric Bernard and Emmanuel Collard, while Tinseau will partner Wayne Taylor and Max Angelelli, as he did last year.

"It's great to have someone like JJ onboard," said Cadillac General Manager, Mark LaNeve. "Having a former Le Mans winner and multiple ALMS race winner sign for Cadillac proves that drivers of JJ's stature are convinced that we have what it takes to go for victories this year. We will do our utmost to do so."

JJ Lehto (Jyrki Jarvilehto in full) started making a name for himself in the mid-eighties when he was crowned Finnish, Scandinavian and European FF1600 Champion in 1986. The following year he won the British and European FF2000 Championships before storming to the British Formula 3 title in 1988.

After a brief spell in F3000 in 1989 he started a Formula 1 career that would see him race in 62 Grand Prix for Onyx, Dallara, Sauber and Benetton. In 1995 and 1996 he scored many podium finishes racing for General Motors' Opel brand in the German and International Touring Car Championships. In 1997 he finished second in the FIA GT Championship, scoring four wins for McLaren. After a season in CART he returned to sportscar racing with BMW in 1999, scoring six overall wins, four class wins and a further eight podium finishes in three seasons. His biggest sportscar win came in 1995 when he won the Le Mans 24 Hours for McLaren in a team managed by current Team Cadillac Director Jeff Hazell.

Christophe Tinseau has been part of the Cadillac sportscar program since its inception, racing for the DAMS team in the FIA and ALMS Championships in 2000 and for Team Cadillac in the 2001 ALMS program. Together with Emmanuel Collard he scored Cadillac's first podium finish in Mosport in August last year.

Team Cadillac presented its new Northstar LMP 02 in Sebring, Florida, one week ago. Between now and the Le Mans 24 Hours in June, the team will run a 26-day test schedule which includes several 24-hour endurance tests. On March 16th, the team and all six drivers will give the Cadillac Northstar LMP 02 its race debut.

General Motors Introduces Personalized, Online Owner Center Service  Owner Center at MyGMLink Provides Vehicle, Service Information; Special Privileges and Offers

DETROIT - General Motors Corp. has created a free online service for GM vehicle owners that gives them something they've been asking for: A single, comprehensive online resource for all of their GM product ownership needs. The Owner Center at MyGMLink allows customers to get e-mail service reminders; access information about their specific GM vehicles, including owner's manuals, maintenance tips, and instructional video-clips, and receive special promotions and privileges.

The new service is now available for owners of all Pontiac models, and Chevrolet Corvette, Suburban, Tahoe, and Avalanche owners. It will become available to all GM vehicle owners in the United States during the first half of 2002; it will also be introduced in Asia, Europe, and Latin America later in the year.

Owners may sign up for the service using the "owners" links at chevy.com and pontiac.com, or simply by going to MyGMLink.com.

"The Chevy Owner Center and the Pontiac Owner Center give customers more convenience, content, and control than any other online ownership service, personalized to the vehicles they own, through the communications channel of their choice, including personal digital assistants (PDAs)," said Stu Dressler, global ownership program manager.

This is a new press release about Cadillac at the Detroit Auto Show, but we know there is a lot of interest in the XLR.
( The Two Seat Roadster being built in Bowling Green.)

Cadillac XLR and Cien Supercar Concept
"Bold and innovative" is an apt description for Cadillac’s upcoming new luxury roadster: XLR. Based on the award-winning Evoq concept car, XLR will feature the first application of a higher output 4.6-liter Northstar engine in a rear-wheel-drive configuration. This new Cadillac was developed on the next generation of GM's performance car architecture, designed specifically for convertibles.

"GM's recently patented performance car body structure is ideal for open air two-seaters," said David Hill, performance cars vehicle line executive. "With advanced steel hydroformed side rails and an aluminum cockpit structure, the XLR will be class leading in structural efficiency, ride quality and agility.

The 2003 Cadillac XLR will be produced on a dedicated assembly line at General Motors' Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky. XLR will be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show as part of GM’s Concept to Reality presentation. XLR will share the stage with the Cadillac Cien supercar concept vehicle. The aerodynamic Cien - Spanish for 100 - holistically illustrates Cadillac's signature design philosophy, melding design and technology in a mid-engine, two-seat sports car.

"With the Cien, we've created the ultimate expression of design, using dynamic lines to achieve geometric forms similar to those of the Evoq, Imaj and Vizón concept vehicles that preceded it," said lead designer Simon Cox, executive director of GM's Advanced Design Studio for Cadillac in Birmingham, England. The premium, V-12-powered Cadillac Cien concept car is a befitting icon to usher in the brand's 100th anniversary.
